7 Day Rongai Route Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha – Rongai Gate – Rongai Cave (6,398 ft – 9,300 ft, 7 km, 3 – 4 hrs)

Driving from Arusha after breakfast to Marangu Gate, where our guides will work on permits and then continue to Nale Moru where our trail starts. We will trail to our first camp which is Rongai Camp for Dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Rongai Cave – 2^nd Cave – Kikelewa Cave (9,300 ft – 11,811 ft, 12 km, 6 – 8 hrs)

After breakfast we begin the morning hike with a steady incline and reach 2nd Cave while en-route to Kikelewa Cave.

Day 3: Kikelewa Cave – Mawenzi Tarn Hut (11,811 ft – 14,160 ft, 5 km, 3 – 4 hrs)

After breakfast we continue with a short and steep hike to Mawenzi Tarn Hart where we will have time to relax. Dinner & Overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn – Mawenzi Ridge – Mawenzi Tarn Hut (14,160 ft – 14,400 ft – 14,160 ft, 4 km, 2 – 4 hrs)

After breakfast we hike steadily up a ridge with fantastic views on both sides, the landscape is rugged and rocky.  After spending a few moments exploring Mawenzi Ridge, we head back to Mawenzi Tarn for camp. This is an acclimatization day.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Hut – Kibo Hut (14,160 ft – 15,430 ft, 8 km, 5 – 6 hrs)

The trail climbs gradually across the rocky lunar landscape as we traverse the between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Our campsite for the night sits at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut (15,430 ft – 19,341 ft – 12,205 ft, 22 km, 10 – 13 hrs

We wake in the middle of the night and begin the final push to reach the Uhuru Peak. The trail to Gilman’s Point is very steep and the ascent will be slow and steady. From Gilman’s, it is a traverse along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. We stay at the summit for a short time, to take photos and enjoy the views, before retracing our steps to all the way back to Horombo Hut.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Arusha (12,205 ft – 6,046 ft, 20 km, 5 – 7 hrs)

After breakfast we continue descending to Marangu Gate, our guide will help use our certificate to prove our achievement of conquring the roof of Africa, them Our drive will meet us and Transfer us to our Hotel / lodge in Arusha.
